As an oil painter of small vibrant palette knife paintings, I seek to create a sense of place, capturing the light, energy and soul of my subject. With my knife, I describe what I see with layers of paint – sometimes loading it on in bold strokes, sometimes sgraffitoing (drawing or scratching into the wet paint), often almost sculpting the paint to tell my story. My goal is to create joyful and sophisticated works of art that speak of the beauty found all around us, painted with thoughtful abandon.

Born in Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay, Diane grew up in rural southeastern Pennsylvania and attended Tyler School of Art of Temple University. She has been an art director in women’s fashion, a graphic designer in New York City, an antiques seller in Washington, DC, and an art gallery consultant in Easton, Maryland. Now, she paints full time, is an instructor at the Academy Art Museum, and is a certified Maryland Master Naturalist. Diane originated and mentors the monthly paint out "Saturdays en Plein Air", sponsored by the Academy; and leads “Nature Sketchers” walks at Adkins Arboretum, Ridgely, Maryland.
Plein Air Magazine writes in a featured article about Mullaly, “Small, Vibrant Palette Knife Painting”, February/March 2018, “Shortly after discovering palette knife painting, this Maryland artist established a set of materials and techniques that now allow her to create intuitive responses to the color, light and texture of the landscape.”
Diane has been juried into numerous national exhibits and events, and her work is held in private collections in the US, Canada, and Europe.
