Love Mask (no. 1)

ABOUT THE WORK
My Love Masks include hand drawn images, painted with vibrant under glazes, on hand built stoneware paper clay dishes. They can be used functionally or decoratively; each piece is fired twice with a clear glaze added prior to the final firing. This was the first of a series that went from just gesturing with hands and eyes, to including a mask in the form of a butterfly - representing personal transformation (not silencing). A significant message communicated by the butterfly concerns our ability to tackle necessary changes with elegance and lightness.
The title is inspired by a quote by James Baldwin. I'm not only referring to the masks we need to wear now during a pandemic, but the masks we've been wearing for years while trying to navigate in our world. “Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within. I use the word 'love' here not merely in the personal sense but as a state of being, or a state of grace - not in the infantile American sense of being made happy but in the tough and universal sense of quest and daring and growth.” - James Baldwin
