ABOUT THE WORK
"Straighten Up and Fly Right" is one of my favorite swing numbers with the perfect tempo for dancing. The song was written by Nat King Cole and Irving Mills. It was based on a black folk tale that Cole's father had used as a theme for one of his sermon's. An excerpt of the lyrics is below. Painting intuitively, I have no pre-conceived ideas. But sometimes, images emerge. Maybe I was listening to this song when I was painting. What do you see? The painting has a contemporary thin, white floater frame that brings the dimensions to 12 3/8" x 12 3/8" x 1 1/2" deep.
A buzzard took the monkey for a ride in the air
The monkey thought that ev'rything was on the square
The buzzard tried to throw the monkey off his back
But the monkey grabbed his neck and said, now, listen, Jack
Straighten up and fly right
Straighten up and fly right
Straighten up and fly right
Cool down papa, don't you blow your top
